ABOUT US

UNITY IN DIVERSITY FOUNDATION  (UDF) is a Non-Governmental, Non-Profit Making, Non-Religious and Non-Political Organization, registered under Companies Ordinance (Cap 212) as a Limited Company by Guarantee, not having a shared capital.
UDF was registered on September 28th 2004, (Certificate of Incorporation No 50181) and obtained on March 13 th 2006 the certificate of Compliance of Non Governmental Organization Registered under the Vice President’s Office (registration No. 1597).
UDF was founded for the following reasons. To unify, train and empower financially diverse expertise of idle experts in different trades for the purpose of running their projects effectively; to develop methodologies for the integrated management  of natural resources which a view to enhancing environmental resilience, rehabilitating degraded environments so as to improve human welfare by alleviating poverty, increasing food and nutritional security and creating employment/income-generation.

OUR MISSION

To identify and unify people with diverse expertise but lacking capacity building, to offer them training in their respective expertise for the purpose of running projects that will contribute to the increase of the national economy and to procure and manage funds to be provided to the trained grantees for using them in running their projects.

2-WHAT WE DO

OBJECTIVES

To provide basic needs to the needy or poor communities, like education, health communication, and other social services. To mobilize at the same time members of the communities, underlying the importance of their participation in the social and community development for their own better standard of life.

Short term Goals
  • To run educational institutes from grass-root level as nursery schools, primary schools, secondary schools, vocational-training schools (secretarial, business/commercial, touristy etc..),
  • To supply the wheelchairs to disable people in Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, BurundiRwanda, Uganda, and Kenya.

Long term Goals
  • To assist the marginalized sectors of the community by providing them with appropriate education and information in order to assert their rights and seek improvement of their living conditions with particular emphasis on women, street children, orphans, disables and HIV/AIDS victims.
  • To carry out research into injustices, and the underlying causes of them and looking for ways of remedying them through documentations and recommendations based on established facts. The researches will be focused on specific categories of people like prisoner and ex-prisoner, aged people, mistreated women.
  • To encourage the government in committing itself to good governance through the ratification of important international human rights acts and instruments and in dedicating itself to the commitment of observing, protecting and respecting human rights and dignity to individuals.
  • To promote immediate relief measures to people suffering from disasters such as epidemics, drought, famine etc.
  • To bring together CBO’S, NGO’S, researches, environmental experts, policy makers and all the stake holders to enable them to participate in the decision-making process on natural resource management, aiming at the formulation of policies and legislation to create an enabling setting for collaborative natural resource management with specific aims like that of combating desertification.
  • To improve access to clean and adequate quantity of water and to sanitary facilities and hygiene education by building the capacities of communities and local groups.
  • To promote health and nutrition in rural areas and to improve the standard of living of rural women by training them and integrating them into economic and social life.


UDF PROJECT FOR THE VICTIMS OF TORTURE

UDF is going to spend specific resources for running a project focused on the prevention of torture and the rehabilitation of the victims. The organization is already working in this field, but will increase its efforts for this purpose.

Primary objectives

  • To set up a clinic for victims and their families
  • To purchase medicines, pay for medical examinations, hospitalization and transportation.
  • To provide professional medical training for doctors, and staff working in the clinic.
  • To provide training focused on torture prevention.  
  • To provide special services for the victims (medical, physiotherapy, counseling, community visit, financial assistance, psychiatric, referrals, social welfare, family-based treatment, psychological, legal)

Treatment

UDF would like to establish its own clinic.
At present clients are treated by voluntary doctors, severely traumatized ones are referred to specialized hospitals or clinics; we now concentrate only on primary victims, but we intend to treat secondary victims once we will set up our own clinic and will have our staff.

Training

UDF is going to offer training and advocacy program to policy officers and prison wardens in the treatment and interrogation of suspects without using torture.

Research, documentation, prevention

UDF is going to conduct researches on torture and victims, focused in particular on violation of the rights of children, women and prisoners. The research will be based on the biography of the victims, documentation and medical reports from the hospital.
Besides UDF has already organized and conducted two workshops in 2005 and 2006 of public awareness program on the rehabilitation of torture victims and on prevention.








PAST ACHIEVEMENTS ACCOMPLISHED BY UDF

We have:
ü  supported orphans affected by HIV/AIDS (20 children of primary school, 8 children of secondary school, 4 children of vocational training school) by providing school uniforms, school fees, writing materials, shoes, food and treatments.
ü  attended to 180 adults affected with HIV/AIDS at home based cares  providing counseling, testing and food as well as sandals, clothes, biscuits, juice, cooking oil, chocolate, pasta and cookies.
ü  provided water services to one rural village in Mbeya.
ü  trained 70 local government officials (ward councilors and secretaries, community development officers, education coordinators and local chiefs) from Mbeya district in good governance and accountability.
ü  provided 15 women with income to start small income generating activities.
ü  trained 67 peer to peer educators and 57 training of trainers in peer education.
ü  provided 550 wheelchairs to 550 disabled people in Mbeya region.
ü  started a Nursery school.
ü  supported with success NGOs and Catholic missionaries in designing different projects.


GEOGRAPHICAL FOCUS..

Our Head Office is in Mbeya city, Ilomba ward, Ituha-Tonya Street. For the time we are operating in Mbeya region but later on  we expect to expand our activities to other regions in Tanzania mainland and outside Tanzania cooperating also with organizations working in other countries.
The projects of wheelchairs, which we are developing at present, is an example of this effort, involving it other countries like Malawi, Zambia, Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya.

1-ADVOCACY PROGRAM

Program objectives

  • To educate and mobilize people so as to create public awareness concerning the role played by the UNITY IN DIVERSITY FOUNDATION by providing basic needs and social services to the poor communities.
  • To mobilize the public toward their participation in community and social development programs and projects for their better standard of living within communities.
  • To encourage and strengthen the present relationship between UDF and other NGO’S in national an international levels, with mutual objectives and interest so as to gain experience from others.

Ideas for the implementation of the program

SEMINARS.
To conduct seminars for officials and groups from Government or Non-Governmental department, social groups and churches. Seminars objective wiil be to educate and create awareness on the role of provision of social services to the people.

INVITATIONS
To invite various officials to the UDF’S projects and activities so as to let them know the role of UDF in provision of social services for the community. Private social groups can as well be invited for the same objectives.

MASS – MEDIA
To write articles of activities, done by the UDF and send them to papers, magazines, or news letters published locally and even internationally.

PUBLIC MEETING
To  participate in public meetings led by other organizations and to prepare special public meetings for the purpose of announcing  the activities done by the organization.

BROCHURES
To prepare and print copies of brochures directed to the public about the organization. The brochures will be sent to the public freely.

EXCHANGE PROGRAMME
To prepare an exchange programme so as to strengthen the present relationship between the UDF and other national, or international organizations, institutions and even individuals who have mutual interests and objectives.




2-CAPACITY BUILDING PROGRAM

Program objectives

  • To build and create more institutional capacities of containing or accommodate activities, infrastructures and other properties for the organizational development (UDF) and for the provision of basic needs and services to the needy or poor communities.
  • To build up institutional manpower development for better management and administration within the UDF.
  • To create financial capacity for UDF, in order to be able to finance the proposed projects of this strategic plan and to up keep UDF to reach sustainability and self- reliance. 

3-PROVISION OF SOCIAL AND COMMUNITY SERVICES PROGRAM

Program objectives

  • To provide social services to members of communities encircling UDF by creating awareness on the importance of living with different people for individual and community peace and social development at large.
  • To encourage people, particularly those people who are living with HIV/AIDS frustrated, sick etc.
  • To provide basic needs and social services to the poor and needy communities by mobilizing people of communities concerned towards the importance of their own participation in community and social societies for what concern in particular health, education, transport and communication services.

ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE

The members of UDF are people who were religious men and women by the vows of poverty, obedience and celibacy, but left their congregations, due to their own reasons, and founded this organization for assisting each other and the whole community.
The background of the members doesn’t prejudge the participation of different people with different religious or political ideals, being UDF based on the values of openness, respect and non-discrimination.
So UDF will be working hand to hand with any organization that will need its support and will share its general objectives.

VOLUNTEERS

UDF welcomes volunteers from different countries.
We have already been receiving volunteers from Zambia, Uganda, The Netherlands, USA, Japan, Hong Kong and Italy. Some of them were students who came for internship and research.


TOURISTS

UDF also welcomes tourist interested in visit Mbeya region.
The organization will offer them the opportunity of knowledge of the reality of this region giving them information about culture and habits of their inhabitants, and guiding them to visit places, monuments, buildings of particular cultural, natural and historical importance.
